Hooray! Healthy Junk Food Meals

My last television appearance was great fun, as we set up five “healthy junk food” meals, and discussed why they were healthy. The “junk” aspect was quite clear!

Everyone knows that maintaining a healthy weight involves maintaining a healthy lifestyle, but who’dathunk that cookies, chips, puddings and beer could be healthy?

Welcome to my world! Recommended products are generally all-natural, and taste exactly like their naughty counterparts. The trick is to eat them for meals or as part of meals, so calories are not added in addition to daily or weekly totals. All meals presented were approximately 500 calories or less.

Frito Lay Sun Chips and Guiness Draught was a hit: Sun Chips offer whole corn, sunflower oil, whole wheat, rice flower, whole oat flour, sugar and salt. The salt is incredibly low at 120 mg per serving (2% recommended allowance), plus they have 2g fiber and 2g protein! There were nearly 2 servings on the plate with a cup of Amy’s Vegetable Barley soup to add volume and nutrition (70 calories), with 16 oz of Guiness Draught (150 calories).

Moderate alcohol has been found to be healthy, and dark beer probably has more antioxidants than light. The whole meal contained 480 calories, and I guarantee you’ll be stuffed! Only one beer was offered (not six), and chips were served on a plate. It’s not about shoveling fistfuls into your mouth from the bag.

How ‘bout a peanut butter and chocolate sandwich? Sounds sinful, doesn’t it?

Two tablespoons of natural peanut butter were topped with a broken up Mars Cocoa Via bar, which is super chocolatey and packed with anti-oxidants; only 80 calories. Martin’s potato bread has the texture of white bread, a buttery flavor, and is magically endowed with 8 grams of protein and 4 grams of fiber! Total calories: 330. Now that’s what I call sweet satisfaction!

Stay tuned for some other merry meals... to be revealed next week.
