We have a nasty habit of taking our eyes for granted. Research from the College of Optometrists suggests that a quarter of adults have gone for more than two years without having their eyes examined, while 18 per cent have left it more than three years. But regular trips to the optician can be important for your health - in some cases, they can mean the difference between life and death.
Optometrists are trained not just to pick up vision defects, but also to spot symptoms in the eye that are a sign of a dozen serious diseases elsewhere. All optometrists undergo medical training as part of their qualification; although they are not fully medically qualified like ophthalmologists - doctors who specialise in eyes - they are the first port of call for the public.
