Swiss doctors uncover new gaming related disease

GENEVA – A 12-year-old girl was ordered to stop playing video games for 10 days by her Swiss doctor after it was found that a serious hand infection she was suffering from was caused by excessive gaming.

The new infection has since been dubbed "Palmare PlayStation Hidradenitis" by professor Vincent Piguet from the University Hospital of Geneva, Swiss news agency ATS reported.

The girl was taken to her doctor after suffering from painful lesions on her palms for four weeks.

"They were huge red nodes which were very spectacular," Piguet said, adding that he later learnt that the girl had hidden from her parents the fact that she spent hours on her PlayStation.

Piguet and his team concluded that the tension of the hands on the console and frenetic pressing on the buttons had triggered minuscule cutaneous injuries which were aggravated by sweat.

After her 10-day ban from PlayStation, the lesions went away.

The research was published in the British Journal of Dermatology.

Caffeine may offer some skin cancer protection

Rich Westerfield, the owner of Aldo Coffee Company serves his cappuccinos to the judges in the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic Region Barista Competition in Cranberry, Pa., Friday, Feb. 6, 2009.[Agencies]

THURSDAY, Feb. 26 -- Past studies have suggested that caffeine might offer some protection from skin cancer, and new research may explain why.

"We have found what we believe to be the mechanism by which caffeine is associated with decreased skin cancer," said lead researcher Dr. Paul Nghiem, an associate professor of dermatology at the University of Washington in Seattle.

For the study, Nghiem's team looked at caffeine's effect on human skin cells in a laboratory that had been exposed to ultraviolet radiation. They found that in cells damaged by UV rays, caffeine interrupted a protein called ATR-Chk1, causing the damaged cells to self-destruct.

"Caffeine has no effect on undamaged cells," Nghiem said.

ATR is essential to damaged cells that are growing rapidly, Nghiem said, and caffeine specifically targets damaged cells that can become cancerous. "Caffeine more than doubles the number of damaged cells that will die normally after a given dose of UV," he said.

"This is a biological mechanism that explains what we have been seeing for many years from the oral intake of caffeine," he added.

The findings were published online Feb. 26 in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology.

But, Nghiem added, people shouldn't increase the amount of coffee or tea they drink to prevent skin cancer. "You are talking a lot of cups for a lot of years for a relatively small effect," he said. "But if you like it, it's another reason to drink it."

Nghiem has also been experimenting with applying caffeine directly to the skin. "It suppresses skin cancer development by as much as 72 percent in mice, and human studies are moving ahead slowly," he said.

It's possible that topical caffeine preparations might one day be used to help prevent skin cancer, Nghiem said. "Caffeine is both a sunscreen and it deletes damaged cells," he said. "It may well make sense to put it into a sunscreen preparation."

Dr. Robin Ashinoff, a dermatologist and clinical associate professor of dermatology at New York University's Langone Medical Center, thinks these findings need to be verified before they can have any clinical application.

"This study tells me that caffeine may be a useful ingredient topically to remove ultraviolet-genetically damaged cells from reproducing," Ashinoff said. "This may help prevent the development of skin cancer."

"It is interesting that caffeine, which is thought to have a negative connotation, has already been shown to be associated with lower incidences of non-melanoma skin cancers in several epidemiological studies," she added.

Dr. Albert Lefkovits, a spokesman for the Skin Cancer Foundation and an associate clinical professor of dermatology at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City, doesn't think it's been proven that caffeine reduces the risk of skin cancer.

"While this is an interesting concept that has been explored before, it will take years of extensive testing to determine whether this will be a worthwhile prevention method," Lefkovits said.

"And, the study doesn't discuss how much caffeine would be needed for any real benefit," he said. "For instance, many people drink large amounts of caffeine on a daily basis and still get skin cancer. Protecting yourself from the sun is currently the only proven way to prevent skin cancer."

US files complaint against Forest for kids' drug

Assorted medicines. The US government Wednesday filed a complaint against pharmaceutical Forest Laboratories Inc. for marketing an anti-depressant that was not approved for children and paying kickbacks to doctors who prescribed it.[Agencies]

WASHINGTON – The US government Wednesday filed a complaint against pharmaceutical Forest Laboratories Inc. for marketing an anti-depressant that was not approved for children and paying kickbacks to doctors who prescribed it.

The Justice Department alleges that Forest's "illegal promotional practices surrounding its antidepressant drugs Celexa and Lexapro caused thousands of false and fraudulent claims to be submitted to federal health care programs."

The complaint refers to a clinical trial that found Celexa "no more effective than the placebo" for children's use, and that "more patients taking Celexa attempted suicide or reported suicidal thoughts than those in the group taking the placebo."

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA), which regulates and supervises the safety of foods, drugs and medical products and devices, had turned down Forest?s request to approve Celexa for pediatric use.

The FDA later also mandated that Forest add a clear warning on Celexa and Lexapro labels, the Justice Department said.

Despite the FDA's actions, it added, Forest "actively promoted pediatric use of the drugs and misled physicians and the public by failing to disclose the results of the negative study."

The company also tried to "induce physicians and others to prescribe Celexa and Lexapro by providing them with various forms of illegal remuneration, including cash payments ... expensive meals and lavish entertainment ... all in violation of the federal anti-kickback statute," the complaint added.

The US government said it based its complaint on two whistleblower actions against New York City-based Forest, under the False Claims Act.

Under the statute, the Justice Department explained, "if it is established that a person has submitted or caused others to submit false or fraudulent claims to the United States, the government can recover treble damages and 5,500 dollars to 11,000 dollars for each false or fraudulent claim filed."

In a successful litigation, whistleblowers stand to receive a share of between 15 percent and 25 percent of the amount recovered, it added.

Study ties fast food to stroke risk

By Julie Steenhuysen

CHICAGO (Reuters) - People who live in neighborhoods packed with fast-food restaurants are more likely to suffer strokes, U.S. researchers said on Thursday.

They said residents of one Texas county who lived in neighborhoods with the highest number of fast-food restaurants had a 13 percent higher risk of experiencing a stroke than those in neighborhoods with the fewest such restaurants.

The study, presented at the American Stroke Association's International Stroke Conference, does not prove living near fast-food restaurants raises the risk of stroke, but it does suggest the two are linked in some way.

"The data show a true association," Dr. Lewis Morgenstern of the University of Michigan's stroke program, who led the study, said in a statement.

But he said it is not clear whether being surrounded by fast-food means you eat more of it, or that it is simply a sign of an unhealthy neighborhood.

"We need to start unraveling why these particular communities have higher stroke risks," Morgenstern said. "Is it direct consumption of fast food? Is it the lack of more healthy options? Is there something completely different in these neighborhoods that is associated with poor health?" he asked.

For the study, Morgenstern and colleagues examined stroke data on residents of Nueces County, Texas, between January 1, 2000 and June 2003.

During that time, county residents suffered a total of 1,247 ischemic strokes, the most common type caused by a blocked artery that chokes off bloodflow to the brain.

They used U.S. Census Bureau demographic and socioeconomic data to determine the number of fast-food restaurants in each neighborhood. And they compared neighborhoods with the lowest number of fast-food restaurants -- fewer than 12 -- to those with the highest number -- more than 33.

They found the relative stroke risk rose one percent for each fast-food restaurant in a neighborhood.

Morgenstern said public health experts should consider fast-food dense neighborhoods as prime areas for stroke prevention programs.

"We need to consider targeting communities that have a lot of fast-food restaurants as places where we can improve health," Morgenstern said.

Prior studies have found a link between fast-food restaurants, heart risks and obesity, leading consumer groups to push for laws such as July's moratorium on new fast-food restaurants in certain Los Angeles neighborhoods.

The food industry often maintains that a lack of exercise is more to blame.

Stroke is the No. 3 killer in the United States behind heart disease and cancer. The CDC estimates 780,000 Americans will have strokes this year. Strokes will kill 150,000 people and leave 15 percent to 30 percent of survivors permanently disabled.

Eat Yogurt, Avoid Bladder Cancer

If you love yogurt, you’re in luck. You probably already know it’s good for you, but I found a recent Swedish study that gives us more evidence. Researchers at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm studied the diets of 80,000 patients in a nine-year span and published their findings in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

They concluded that women who consumed two servings of yogurt every day were 45% less likely to develop bladder cancer than those who only eat it occasionally or not at all (36% for men). What’s interesting is that the researchers found no protective benefit in other dairy products. It was only the yogurt or cultured milk products with lactic acid bacteria.

Lead study author Alicja Wolk, Ph.D., says the probiotic called lactobacillus in cultured dairy products could be responsible for providing these protective benefits. (Ref: Women’s Health, March 2009, p. 28)

Of course, it’s safe to say that most people who eat yogurt probably lead healthier lifestyles, but the findings are still significant. Yeah!

The 3-year-old girl who desperately needs a heart transplant-like her twin sister

Rare condition: Three-year-old Katie (left) has had a transplant and twin sister Lauren (right) needs one too. [Agencies]

With their angelic smiles these adorable twin sisters appear to be like any other healthy and happy three year old girls.

But little Lauren Williams is in desperate need of a heart transplant, her twin Katie is recovering from a heart swap and their mother also needs the life-saving surgery. The family have been diagnosed with the extremely rare heart condition dilated cardiomyopathy, which causes the heart to enlarge and pump blood less efficiently.

Katie was diagnosed at just three months old and got her new heart a few months later but she will need a second transplant in 10 years. Doctors originally thought Lauren had escaped the potentially fatal condition but now she's been diagnosed as being in the early stages as well - as has her mother Louise Snape, 31. Louise said: 'We live in limbo land. We have to take everyday as it comes.

'I lost my father to the condition and my sister, cousin and step brother have all died. 'The girls were a miracle and they mean the world to us but I can't think in weeks, I have to think in days and that's something I had to learn early on as a mum.'

Both Louise and Lauren need transplants as soon as possible.

Miss Snape grew up without knowing she had the condition because her father decided it would be kinder not to tell her.

She had to give up work after she was diagnosed when the girls were four months old.

The sisters are both on medication and although Katie is recovering well from her operation, she still needs to be fed through a tube.

Louise, from Middleton, Greater Manchester, said: 'A lot more needs to be done to recognise these conditions as early as possible.

'I think all babies should be screened if they are born into a family with a history of heart problems.'

Her plea comes as the British Heart Foundation launches an appeal for a ?113,000 screening machine for the Royal Manchester Children's Hospital. Dad Simon, 40, gave up his factory job during Louise's difficult pregnancy and has cared for his family at home since. He said: 'The hardest part is watching them struggle and take their medication, but the girls are amazing and understand so much. They're an inspiration.'

Mothers who enjoyed stimulating childhood 'have brainier babies'

A new study has found that a mother's childhood experiences may influence the brain development of her sons and daughters.[Agencies]

A mother's childhood experiences may influence not only her own brain development but also that of her sons and daughters, a study suggests.

Researchers in the US found that a stimulating environment early in life improved the memory of female mice with a genetic learning defect.

This was an expected result which supported previous research. What was surprising was that after becoming adults, the mice appeared to transmit the beneficial effects of their childhood experience to their own offspring.

The newborn mice inherited the same genetic problem, but like their mothers were not impaired by it.

Dr Dean Hartley, one of the researchers from Rush University Medical Centre in Chicago said: 'What is so unique about this study is that we provided an enriched environment during pre-adolescence, months before the mice became pregnant, yet the beneficial effect reached into the next generation.

'The offspring had improved memory even without an enriched environment.' The findings imply that the severity of childhood learning disorders may be affected by what an individual's mother experienced as a child, the scientists said. When the mother mice had not yet reached adolescence they spent two weeks in an enriched environment which included stimulation by novel objects, social interaction, and voluntary exercise. At the end of this time their memory defect was reversed. The scientists were careful to take account of the fact that mice with such a background might turn out to be more nurturing mothers. They did this by allowing some of the second generation mice to be raised by foster mothers lacking the same early enrichment experience. It made no difference, even these mice, like their biological mothers, were able to overcome their inherited learning defect. The researchers reported their results today in The Journal of Neuroscience. They believe the phenomenon can be explained by epigenetics - environmentally-induced changes in the structure of DNA and chromosomes which are passed on to offspring. Commenting on the study, Dr Anthony Hannan, an epigenetics expert from the University of Melbourne in Australia, said: 'This study and others are revolutionising our understanding of how nature, starting with an individual's DNA sequence, and nurture, including the way life experience alters the way DNA is expressed, can combine. 'Not only to regulate the health of subsequent generations, but also possibly the incidence of disease.'

Plums are new super-food and full of disease-fighting antioxidants

Plums are being heralded as the new 'super-food' by scientists. They found the purple fruit matched or exceeded blueberries in antioxidants and phytonutrients, which help prevent disease.

Researcher Dr David Byrne, of AgriLife Research, said tests revealed one plum contains about the same amount of antioxidants as a handful of blueberries. Antioxidants are molecules that sweep through a body looking for free radicals to knock out. Free radicals are atoms or molecules that lurk where diseases like cancer and heart disease are found. Fellow scientist Dr Luis Cisneros, who helped with the Texas-based research, said: 'Blueberries have some stiff competition. 'People tend to eat just a few blueberries at a time - a few on their cereal or maybe as an ingredient mixed with other fruit in a fruit salad. 'But people will eat a whole plum at once and get the full benefit.' Catherine Collins, principal dietition at London's St George's Hospital, welcomed the research.

She said: 'Plums are very good for us and because they tend to come in punnets for about ?1 they are fairly cheap.

'If everyone was eating two or three small plums a day that would be great. Many of the healthy chemicals and antioxidants in fruit and vegetables are in the different colour agents and so people should try to eat a rainbow of different coloured fruit.

'Plums are also low in calories and fat free. The important thing is not to peel your plums - you must eat the skin because that's where many of the colour agents and antioxidants are.' Weight for weight UK supermarkets such as Tesco and Sainsbury charge around three times more for blueberries than plums.

The US team examined the full content of plums then tested the effect of the compounds they found on breast cancer cells and cholesterol in the lab. The scientist carried further research which threw up information which they hope can be used for breeding efforts to produce better fruit.

Dr Byrne noted that one benefit the team found was that the phytonutrients in plums inhibited breast cancer growth without adversely affecting normal cell growth. He said this type of research needs further study.

Dr Cisneros added blueberries, peaches and nectarines have similar benefits to plums.

Combat your stress hormones

Self Magazine reports that increasing your consumption of potassium and reducing your sodium intake could help reduce your stress levels. Research published in the British Journal of Nutrition found that increasing potassium and cutting sodium helps lower levels of cortisol, a stress hormone, in your body.

Remember to always check food labels when you’re trying to cut back on sodium. Or, just eat more whole foods (away from the box and food labels) and be stingy with how much salt you add to them. To boost your potassium, try eating more leafy greens, broccoli, tomatoes, raw celery, bananas, etc.

The connection between food and your mood is clear, but this truth is largely unknown by most of the American public.

Black tea could protect against diabetes

Natural News reports that some natural chemicals in black tea could help protect you from diabetes. Research published in the journal Aging Cell found that these chemicals can act like insulin in the body. Though the research is preliminary, some studies found that drinking black tea could reduce heart disease and risk of cancer. Lead researcher on the study, Graham Rena, said that although their findings are stunning, “people shouldn’t be rushing to drink masses of black tea thinking it will cure them of diabetes. We are still some way from this leading to new treatments or dietary advice.”

As for me, I was interested in this study because I’ve been considering trying out black tea as a replacement for my morning coffee which has been upsetting my stomach lately. If I cut out coffee, I would still like something warm, healthy, and caffeinated in the a.m. Anyone else drink tea as a morning pick-me-up?
